Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander is difficult to get into. The language can be daunting, the point of views change, and there’s enough naval terminology out there to sink a reader’s interest before it even gets launched. Yet, as I started to craft the HMS Sophie from a hunk of limewood (a fiction of a ship, and Jack Aubrey’s first commission), I realized that I might actually be enjoying the book.

Double whammy of results this month! Just found out that Curses of Scale is a finalist for both the Reader’s Favorite Awards, and the Red City Review Award Contest 🙂 Will find out the winners for the latter in September, keeping my fingers crossed!

Editors are unique, and fascinating creatures. When they are not scouring manuscripts for their sustenance of choice – improper use of homophones – they spend long hours partaking in elaborate grooming rituals, that appear to mostly involve excessive amounts of coffee and self-loathing. Acquiring an editor demands patience, an awful manuscript, and a certain degree of sadism.
